Introduction
You are invited to take part in a research study conducted by Anupam Debashis Roy as part of the student’s DPhil research at the Department of Sociology in the University of Oxford on contemporary social movements in Bangladesh. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why this research is being conducted and what it will involve. Please take the time to read the following information carefully. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Purpose of the Research
This research aims to analyze the 2024 July Uprising in Bangladesh and compare it with three major youth-based social movements including but not limited to:
- The 2015 No VAT on Education Movement
- The 2018 Quota Reform Movement
- The 2018 Road Safety Movement
The study seeks to understand how social movements evolve, how they influence political change, and the role of digital media, repression, and strategic flexibility in their outcomes. The findings will contribute to academic discourse on social movements and contentious politics in authoritarian contexts.
Why You Have Been Invited
You have been invited to participate in this study because of your involvement in, knowledge of, or experience with the July Uprising or other related social movements. Your insights will be valuable in understanding the motivations, strategies, and outcomes of these movements.
What Participation Involves
If you agree to participate, you will be asked to provide responses to a questionnaire. The questions will focus on your experiences, perspectives, and understanding of the movement.
Voluntary Participation and Withdrawal
Participation in this study is completely voluntary. You may choose not to answer any question you are uncomfortable with, and you are free to withdraw from the study at any time without providing a reason. Withdrawing will not affect your standing in any way.

Potential Risks and Benefits
- Risks: While this study does not involve significant risks, discussing past experiences in activism may evoke strong emotions. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, you may stop the interview or skip any question.
- Benefits: Your participation will contribute to a deeper understanding of social movements and their impact. The findings may help activists, policymakers, and researchers better comprehend the dynamics of political mobilisation in Bangladesh.
